Sin of Lying Sermon - Pastor Steve Winter

This is my text I used for the sermon tonight 9/27/2001 about lying. I have it uploaded to

Many find that it is the easy way when facing a difficult or even
inconvenient situation to simply lie. I know of a United
Pentecostal Church International preacher that not only will lie, but
encourages others to lie as well.

There are some who feel that lying can be the "kind" thing to do in
order to avoid conflict. But lying is a very serious matter.
Trust lost may never be regained and so many will lie much more than
they originally intended to try to cover their "small" lie. They
have to keep telling bigger lies to cover their previous lying.

The devil himself is the father of lies.

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your
father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode
not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh
a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

There is not much sin warned against in the Word of God more serious
than lying. I believe that there is not much that is more offensive
to God than a liar.

Isaiah 44:25 That frustrateth the tokens of the liars, and maketh
diviners mad; that turneth wise men backward, and maketh their
knowledge foolish;

Consider the company that liars are listed among in the Word of God.

1 Timothy 1:10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves
with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and
if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;

No unrepentant liar should in their remotest dreams think that they
will be saved. So does that mean there is no hope for the liar?
No, but the only hope of the liar is to REPENT of their lying and
repentance means QUITTING. A smoker that repents of smoking QUITS
SMOKING! If they don't quit, then they didn't really repent!

Luke 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all
likewise perish.

Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the
abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and
idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which
burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

There are very few cases in the New Testament of individuals being
actually struck down dead by God on the spot. Consider this study
and the sin that was committed.

Acts 5:1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife,
sold a possession,
2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it,
and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie
to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold,
was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in
thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost:
and great fear came on all them that heard these things.
6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and
buried him.
7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife,
not knowing what was done, came in.
8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for
so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.
9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together
to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have
buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.
10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the
ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying
her forth, buried her by her husband.
11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as
heard these things.

Notice when Peter spoke to Ananias in verse 4. Why did they lie if
not just so people would feel a certain way about them? Did they not
lie and die for fellowship, popularity? Think about that point.
What a shame! They were under no obligation or anything; this was
a voluntary giving situation. They lied just for popularity!

There are a lot of modern day people, even so called "preachers" that
need to consider how God feels about lying.

Proverbs 22:1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches,
and loving favour rather than silver and gold.

This does not mean that lying is some unforgivable sin. All have
lied at some point in their life, all have been sinners at some
point in their life but for someone to deliberately lie after having
obeyed Acts 2:38, is a grievous matter. The cure for lying is
repentance as it is for other sin.

But for an obeyer of Acts 2:38 to deliberately sin is a dangerous

Hebrews 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the
knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery
indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three
29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought
worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted
the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy
thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

That is the grievous situation of the reprobate and the infidel and
others who deliberately engage in sinful activity after obeying Acts
2:38 and why we almost never see a reprobate or infidel come to
repentance. I don't know of any!

God draws a distinction between regular sinners and sinners who
are pretending to be Christians.

1 Cor 5:9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with
10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with
the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye
needs go out of the world.
11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man
that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an
idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an
one no not to eat.
12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not
ye judge them that are within?
13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from
among yourselves that wicked person.

Is there any of age past infancy who has not at some point had
someone deliberately lie to them? Once that happened it is hard if
not impossible to ever trust that person. Trust that is betrayed is
rarely restored.

Psalms 101:7 He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house:
he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.

Again, according to Jesus Christ who is the father of lies?

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your
father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode
not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh
a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Now I don't mean to say that everyone who is mistaken or misled is
necessarily a liar, just like every mistake is not necessarily a
sin. But deliberate lying and other deliberate sin is a grievous
